Genesee Gateway Park stretches almost a half mile south along the Genesee River to the Ford Street Bridge. The north end of the park features a unique playground, a full-size basketball court, picnic areas, and boat launch which is equipped to handle canoes and kayaks.
The Genesee River was created by the last great ice sheet, which covered New York around 10,000 years ago. The river flows 157 miles from its source in Ulysses, Pennsylvania to Lake Ontario. Centuries ago, the river served as a boundary between the lands of the Seneca to the east and the lands of the Erie to the west. The Seneca were part of the Haudenosaunee confederacy, who named the river “Ge-ne-see,” which means “pleasant banks.” Rochester’s High Falls was then known as the Great Seneca Falls.

The tour takes you upstream to the Ford Street bridge, downstream along the west bank of the river to the Court Street bridge, and then returns to Genesee Gateway Park.

Genesee Gateway Park is located along the Genesee Riverway Trail, a scenic multi-use trail which runs along the river from Lake Ontario to the Erie Canal. It is a designated National Recreational Trail, and connects to both the statewide Erie Canal Heritage Trail and the Genesee Valley Greenway Trail, which continues south along the Genesee River.
