Genesee River Alliance

The Genesee River is a key resource for the City of Rochester and surrounding areas.  It offers scenic views, majestic waterfalls, easy bike rides, and challenging walks. The Genesee River Alliance (a Genesee Land Trust project) is working to build connections between community organizations, neighborhoods, businesses, and local government.  Our goal is to protect and improve the Genesee River corridor as a healthy, ecological, educational, and recreational resource for the neighborhoods and communities through which it flows.

The Genesee River Alliance has created this website to provide information for everyone interested in walking, biking, or boating along the Genesee Riverway Trail.  The Alliance has also developed a series of guided “Mile-A-Month” walks along the river.  Sign up for the Genesee River Alliance eNews in order to receive notifications about these guided tours and other events.

Genesee River Alliance partners work together to promote the river and advocate for improved access for all neighborhoods. Here are a few examples:

  • Bridging the gaps in the Genesee Riverway Trail, including connecting the El Camino neighborhood with High Falls and downtown by using the former Running Track Bridge to provide an awe-inspiring walk, high above the river.
  • Developing an off-road trail on the east side of the Genesee River to Lake Ontario.
  • Improving the connections with the Empire Trail and the Genesee Valley Greenway Trail, creating a world-class trail system following the course of the Genesee River and the Erie Canal.
